Silicone in shampoo causes damage to hair
Many people are starting to realise the damage silicone shampoos have on their hair. Due to the fact, it makes your roots look greasy and your ends look dry. Thus you are forever having to wash your hair.
This is a great marketing trick for silicone shampoo companies. Because the first time you wash your hair, your hair looks and feels amazing. Because silicone coats your hair. Thus making your hair shiny.
But within a few days, your hair starts to look greasy at the roots, So you wash it again, and again and again. But what you do not realise is it’s the shampoo that makes your hair greasy. Not your natural oils.
Silicone is a problem
The problem is most people have no idea why they have to keep washing their hair.
Sometimes they blame the environment or the heat. But they usually do not know that it can be your silicone-based shampoo giving you all your problems.
The pro-silicone crowd says silicone helps to make your hair shiny and free of frizz. That is true the first time you use the shampoo it gives that effect. But what about in the long run?
The choice to go silicone-free can be difficult. As it takes a while to see the impact these shampoos have on your hair.
Is silicone safe?
Shampoos containing silicone are safe. A 2014 study by a Trusted Source said it was, so it must be. The researchers looked at trials done on animals and humans. They found the 62 ingredients derived from silicones that are used in cosmetics were safe at the concentration used in the products.
Why go silicone-free?
Some people love to use hair products with silicone. As this helps to control their unruly hair. Making it into beautiful silky and shiny hair. But what they may not notice is silicone builds up over time.
Each hair becomes heavier and greasier at the roots. Thus creating dryer hair on the mid-lengths and ends.
If you have straight hair this leads to limp lifeless hair.
If you have curly hair the heaviness of silicone may lead to less bounce in your curls. Thus eventually flattening out your curls.
Going silicone-free revives your hair and yourself.
As ” Your hair is 90% of your selfie.”
Do you love silicone?
If you prefer to use a silicone shampoo that is no problem. You can remove the build-up of silicone in your hair with a clarifying shampoo like – Avalon Organics Shampoo, Clarifying Lemon
But these shampoos can be harsh on the hair and scalp. As they strip all your natural oils too. These natural oils are there for a reason. To protect your scalp and your roots from harsh environmental damage.
So, if you are using a clarifying shampoo please only use it once in a while. Roughly about once a month.
I would suggest using a more natural form to cleanse your hair. Like an apple cider vinegar rinse. Using Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar
Ultimately, the choice to use a silicone-free shampoo comes down to you. If you like how your hair looks and feels then there is no need to change. But if you think silicones are the culprit behind your limp and greasy-looking hair. Then consider using a silicone-free shampoo. You will notice the difference.
How did I choose the best silicone-free shampoo?
As no two people are the same and no two strands of hair are the same. You will find that what shampoo works for one person may not work for another. Even smells are a strong factor in choosing a shampoo.
So I created a list that hopefully fulfils all of your dreams.
I selected a few different shampoos at various prices and kept all hair types in mind. I looked at online reviews, prices and ingredients. I also double-checked that the products I have recommended truly have no silicones (typically these ingredients end in “-cone”).
Pricing guide
$ = under $15
$$ = $15–$25
$$$ = over $25
