Covering over 1,500 hectares of lush forest, rivers, grasslands, and bamboo groves, it stands as the largest captive elephant sanctuary in the region. The Sarus Crane Reserve is a beautiful place to visit especially if heading to Kampot. Once abundant across South and Southeast Asia, the Sarus Crance is now facing alarming population declines due to hunting, egg collection, and habitat loss. Cambodia, along with adjacent areas of Laos and Vietnam, hosts the last remaining stronghold for these majestic birds. However, Sarus Cranes in Cambodia are particularly vulnerable, relying on specific wetland habitats for breeding and feeding.
To address the urgent threats facing these iconic birds, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Cambodia Program launched a comprehensive Sarus Crane Conservation Project in 2006. Working in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of the Royal Government of Cambodia, this initiative aims to safeguard the remaining breeding and non-breeding sites essential for the survival of Sarus Cranes in the region

11- Immerse Yourself in Cambodian Festivals
A Journey of Tradition and Community
The Cambodian calendar includes many public holidays, with festivals celebrated throughout the year.
Khmer New Year (Sus’Dei Chnam Thmei) is the main holiday, which usually falls around the 14th-16th of April. People gather in the streets and near rivers to engage in friendly water fights using buckets, water guns, or simply splashing water on one another. This cleansing symbolizses washing away bad luck and misfortunes from the past year and welcoming a fresh start.
Pchum Ben, also known as “Ancestors’ Day”, “Festival of the Dead” or “Hungry Ghosts Festival”. This is a 15-day Cambodian religious festival that culminates in the Khmer calendar on the 15th day of the tenth month and marks the end of Buddhist Lent. The Cambodians commemorate up to seven generations of their ancestors. A religious festival in which Cambodians remember the dead, and give offerings to monks.
The Water Festival, (Bon Om Touk) typically celebrated around the 18th-20th of November, is a vibrant and joyous occasion in Cambodia. This festival marks the beginning of the dry season, one of the country’s two distinct seasons. While the dry season, spanning from November to April, attracts the majority of tourists with its pleasant weather, the rainy season brings rain, flooding, and an opportunity for families to come together.
During the Water Festival, people gather along the banks of the Tonle Sap River in Phnom Penh to witness exhilarating boat races, a colourful spectacle that symbolises unity and community spirit.
