There are generally two ways to remove silicone from hair: “organic” and “chemical”. The chemical way is simple; use a shampoo but so is the organic way. Use an apple cider vinegar rinse.

Apple cider vinegar is amazing

Apple cider vinegar is one of the best items you can have in your house. It helps heal many skin conditions and even your body internally. But what can it do to help your hair?

I stopped using shampoos and conditioners with silicone inside them many, many years ago. This was because one of the representatives from Toni and Guy came into our salon. He of course wanted us to sell his Tony and Guy products. But he also warned us about the effects of silicone on your hair.

Once, I started to research all about silicone in products, I was shocked. I realised that many of my client’s problems with their hair were related to the buildup of silicone. So, I started to look for natural ways to help remove the build-up of silicone.

I also started to sell companies’ products that only produced silicone-free shampoo and silicone-free conditioners. I would recommend a clarifying shampoo to help remove the excessive build on my client’s hair for those who do not like the smell of apple cider vinegar. But many people chose the natural form.

Using apple cider vinegar rinse helped my clients improve their overall hair and scalp health.

Apple cider vinegar benefits as a Hair Rinse

Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

An apple cider vinegar rinse is a really easy way to clarify your hair. It helps to remove the build-up of silicone on your hair. It also helps to seal the hair cuticles of your hair thus preventing frizz. Which creates more shine and volume.

Apple cider vinegar rinse also helps to heal your scalp. Especially if you have been using bad products that strip your natural oils from the scalp or even overwash your hair. Even your health has a huge role in how your hair looks. Because we all are what we eat.

Thus if your scalp does not have the natural oils your body produces you can end up will all sorts of problems. Problems like real dandruff known as Seborrhoeic Dermatitis, which is a type of skin rash similar to eczema. Also, dry flaky white bits that you often see floating around. Many people call this dandruff and will use a bad shampoo like Head and Shoulders, as they think they have dandruff. Do not forget these companies produce and design these products for you to just keep using them.

Your body’s natural oils

Removing your body’s natural oils results in your hair appearing oily more quickly. Thus you wash your hair more often, which creates your body’s natural defence which is to produce more oils. Which then became a vicious circle. wash, wash and wash.

Using ACV rinse now and then removes product buildup and excess oils to leave your scalp refreshed. As apple cider vinegar is acidic, it is also beneficial for balancing the pH levels of your hair.

Hair that is frizzy or has a strong red colour tends to be more alkaline. So using the ACV rinse can help to balance that out and leave you with silky, and shiny hair. Also, for curly hair that has been weighed down by products and lost the curls. An ACV rinse will help reset your curls, making some ‘proven methods’ finally work for you and your curls.

One of the best bits of an apple cider vinegar rinse is how easy it is to make. All you need to do is mix 1 part apple cider vinegar with 2 parts water in any container. The amount of each is really up to you just make sure you stick to the 1:2 ratio. But here is an example, use 250ml (1 cup) of apple cider vinegar, and mix it with 500ml (2 cups) of water.

I typically use 125ml (half a cup) of apple cider vinegar to 250ml (1 cup) of water, but that is because I usually have half a head of hair. Well, it all depends on how I have decided to cut it that month. So take your hair length and the density of your hair into consideration and see what works for you.

Once you have your rinse, it’s time to hop in the shower. You can use this rinse in a few different ways:

  • At the beginning of your shower, do so before shampooing your hair. That is if the smell bothers you.

  • As a final rinse, after shampooing and conditioning,

  • In between your shampoo and conditioner,

I prefer to use it after rinsing out my shampoo as then I use my conditioner after and I am left with the wonderful smell of my conditioner.

I use this one right now

I say right now because I am always trying something new.

So what do I do?

So what do I do?

I carefully pour the ACV rinse all over my scalp which usually runs all over my body too. But that is not harmful in fact, it can be helpful for your body too. I then gently massage it into my scalp. I let the hair rinse sit on my hair for 1-2 minutes before rinsing with water. I then follow with my conditioner which I do not fully wash out. The reason I do not fully wash my conditioner out is that my hair is slightly curly. So leaving some conditioner helps to stop it from looking so flyaway.

If you choose to use it as a final hair rinse, you would apply it the same way after your conditioner and not rinse it out at all. Regardless of which way you choose to use it, one important thing to remember is not to get it in your eyes! Thus I made that mistake before and it was not fun.

For those of you with colour-treated hair, the apple cider vinegar rinse is not very acidic. So you can safely use it without stripping your hair colour. Vinegar for hair can only affect its colour if you use it more than twice a week.

The only downside of this ACV rinse is the apple cider vinegar smell. If the smell bothers you I would recommend adding some flower extract or essential oils to your rinse. Using the rinse in between your shampoo and conditioner is the best option though.

The ACV rinse doesn’t need to be used more than once a month, unless you are using silicone products. Then I recommend once a week. But overall, the frequency depends on your hair type and how much build-up you experience.

I use an ACV rinse about once every two months. But I do not use any products on my hair like hairspray, mouse etc. I just squeeze my conditioner into my hair once it’s dry. On the rare occasion, that I use dry shampoo, I will then use the rinse. But again that is rare.

If you do use a mouse, hair spray, heat protection spray or an after-serum I recommend these. As these are the ones I use on my clients.

What’s important?

What's important?

It’s important to know that if you have low porosity or protein-sensitive hair, this rinse might make your hair feel dry and brittle. If that’s the case, use this rinse with caution. So use it maybe only once every two months. Also, add more water to the rinse.

If your hair still feels dry after it has dried squeeze some conditioner into the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. Be careful not to put the conditioner too close to the roots, otherwise, it will make them look oily. You can also use a deep treatment on your hair the next time you wash it. One like this treatment is the great Arvazallia Hydrating Argan Oil Hair Mask and Deep Conditioner for Dry or Damaged Hair

Takeaway

The most important bit is to listen to your hair. As I am able to touch and feel it this has to be up to you. So focus on what works best for your hair type and your hair care preferences. But I do know an ACV rinse will become the best friend for you, your hair and your scalp.

The apple cider vinegar rinse is one of the DIY treatments that I have been using for a very long time. I will be creating even more blogs with my helpful DIY tips.

Have a great day and amazing shiny healthy hair.
