A Town of Contrasts
A Town in Transition
The beautiful town has undergone a fascinating transformation over the years. Once a quiet retreat for hippies and backpackers, it has evolved into a vibrant destination while retaining its laid-back charm. Today, it attracts a diverse crowd, from expats and digital nomads to luxury travellers. The riverside promenade, bustling nightlife, and thriving Khmer cuisine reflect its growth, yet it still maintains a sense of authenticity that sets it apart from other Cambodian hotspots.
However, this evolution hasn’t been without its challenges. In recent years, the city centre has seen a rise in girly bars, attracting an influx of older men and altering the town’s atmosphere. While these establishments have brought economic activity to the area, they’ve also sparked mixed reactions. Some visitors and locals lament the loss of its once-tranquil charm, feeling that the peaceful reputation and tight-knit community are being overshadowed by a more commercialised vibe.
Despite these changes, the true essence remains intact. Beyond the bustling centre, the serene riverside, lush countryside, and warm hospitality continue to captivate those who venture further. By exploring beyond the main streets, you’ll reveal the town that locals know and love—a place of timeless beauty, rich culture, and authentic experiences.

Kep
A Coastal Escape
Founded during the French colonial era, Kep was once a luxury beach resort town. Today, it’s a charming blend of restored elegance and hauntingly beautiful abandoned villas, offering a glimpse into its storied past.
What to Do in Kep
Relax and Unwind: Kep is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside, with its rice paddies, salt fields, and water buffalo.
Crab Market: Kep is famous for its fresh seafood, particularly its succulent crab. Wander through the bustling crab market and enjoy a meal at one of the nearby seaside restaurants.
Scenic Drives: Explore Kep by tuk-tuk, stopping at local markets, fishing villages, and salt fields to witness traditional Cambodian life.
Island Hopping: While Kep’s beaches may not rival those of other Southeast Asian destinations, its nearby islands offer secluded spots for relaxation and exploration.
The Sounds of Kampot and Kep
Kampot’s soundscape is as unique as its landscape. The town is alive with the twittering of swallows, attracted by speakers designed to produce bird’s nests—a key ingredient in the prized bird’s nest soup. This fascinating industry adds to the region’s allure.
By night, Kampot comes alive with music, from live bands to local artists, creating a vibrant cultural experience. Whether you’re sipping a drink by the river or dancing at a local club, the rhythm of Kampot will stay with you long after you leave.
