Transform Lives | The Profound Impact of Teaching

Transform Lives | The Profound Impact of Teaching

Why I Became a Teacher

Why I Became a Teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young people. Teaching allows me to share my love of learning and to inspire others to discover their passions. Witnessing the growth and development of my students brings me immense joy and fulfilment. I believe in the power of education to transform lives and create a brighter future, and I wanted to be a part of that journey. Teaching is not just a profession for me, it’s a calling that fills my heart with purpose and excitement every day.

Before becoming a teacher, I often found myself chatting with friends who were already in the profession. I would ask, “Why did you want to be a teacher?” Some even had negative sides and said to me, saying “Teaching isn’t fun anymore. Don’t do it.” Those words lingered in my mind, but as usual, I never listened deeply enough. I felt a strong desire to contribute to the lives of today’s children for the better. I wanted to be a guiding light, helping them discover their potential and confidence.

After stepping away from my hairdressing shop, which no longer filled me with joy, I felt a profound calling to teach, especially in Cambodia, a place where the echoes of history remind us of the brilliant minds that were lost. I envisioned uplifting the new generation, pouring my passion into creating a positive impact.

Igniting a Passion

My Journey to Teach in Cambodia

Igniting a Passion

From a very young age, the desire to share what I had learned and help others was ingrained in me. Not by my family, but by the experiences and emotions I encountered in life. When I came to Cambodia, I felt a strong calling to teach the Khmer people as many skills as I could. I wanted to contribute to their growth and empowerment.

When I first began my teaching journey with DADA, it was in the online realm. I had the privilege of teaching young Chinese students ranging from just 6 months to 16 years old. I was genuinely fascinated by how quickly a tiny 6-month-old could master the word “hello.” It was a delightful reminder of the incredible capacity for learning that exists in even the youngest of minds. Each lesson was a journey of discovery, filled with moments of joy and connection that deepened my love for teaching.

I then transitioned to working with another Chinese school called BingABC who collaborate with the government education system. This organization has been a wonderful fit for me over the past five years. Although they maintain strict standards, I appreciate this structure as it helps ensure that I focus on my primary role, teaching.

Navigating classroom management, in particular, was a steep learning curve. My classes varied greatly, ranging from one-on-one classes to larger groups of up to thirty-four students. Yet, through persistence and adaptability, I discovered strategies that worked for both me and my students. Isn’t that the essence of teaching? Embracing the journey of learning and growth, both for ourselves and those we guide?

I then transitioned to a substitute teacher role at Peppercorns Home School. This place was established in Kampot in 2016, by three mums who wanted to offer their children and others a chance to learn in a home-school style. Peppercorns Home School offers early childhood and primary education for students ages 3-13. They incorporate a combined international curriculum using play-based and thematic learning via half and full-day programs.

I loved my new job!

More Than hairdressing

I loved my new job

Each day, I woke up excited, whether it was to head to work or teach in my at-home classroom. I dedicated hours to creating drawings and props for my lessons, infusing creativity into the learning environment. The students brought immense joy and energy into my life with their quirky habits and infectious enthusiasm for learning.

In comparison to hairdressing, where you often play the role of psychologist and counsellor while also performing the artistic task of cutting or colouring hair, teaching felt like a breath of fresh air. Hairdressing requires a unique skill set, balancing both the emotional and creative aspects, but teaching allowed me to focus entirely on nurturing curiosity and fostering a love for learning. It was a joyful shift, and I cherished every moment spent inspiring young minds!

Why I Love Teaching

Why I Love Teaching

I love teaching for several heartfelt reasons-

Making a Difference– Each day, I have the incredible opportunity to positively impact my student’s lives. Guiding them on their educational journeys and helping them discover their passions.

Creativity– Teaching is a canvas for my creativity. Designing lessons, creating engaging activities, and presenting material in innovative ways keep the experience fresh and exciting.

Building Relationships– I cherish the connections I form with my students. Watching them grow and succeed fills me with immense joy, and being a trusted mentor in their lives is profoundly fulfilling.

Continuous Learning– Teaching is a two-way street. I learn alongside my students, gaining new perspectives and insights that enrich my understanding of the world.

Joy and Energy– The enthusiasm and curiosity of my students energize me. Their quirky habits and genuine excitement for learning create a vibrant classroom atmosphere that I love being part of.

Challenge and Growth– The challenges I face as a teacher push me to grow both professionally and personally. Finding solutions to problems and adapting to new situations fosters resilience and creativity.

Legacy– I take pride in shaping the future. The knowledge and values I impart to my students contribute to building a better world, making my work feel meaningful and impactful.

Ultimately, my passion for teaching stems from the joy of nurturing young minds, fostering a love for learning, and creating a positive and lasting influence on my student’s lives. An enriching experience that keeps my passion for teaching alive

Not Bravery

But Passion

When I tell people I teach all grades, including sixth grade, their first reaction is often, “You’re brave.” It’s as if I deserve a badge of honour for simply doing what I love. But let’s be real, bravery comes in many forms. I think accountants deserve a badge for managing finances, doctors for facing our health fears, and police officers for protecting our communities.

Every single person who rises each morning to do their job and finds joy in it deserves to be celebrated! Take Joe, for example, who runs an amazing shelter here in Kampot for abused dogs, those bred for money, those stolen for the dog restaurants, and those stolen from their homes. He dedicates his life to these animals, spending countless hours working to find them loving, forever homes. His commitment to these incredible creatures is truly inspiring.

I am not brave for being a teacher, I am human for pursuing my passion and persevering through challenges.

Do I inspire you to make a difference? If you can answer yes to that question, I urge you to become (or remain) a teacher! Have a look at my post  – 5 Inspiring Reasons to Embark on Your Teaching Journey.

Schools need passionate educators, and teachers who wake up every day saying, “I want to do this.”

I want to encourage you and do not let negativity sway you. If teaching ignites your passion, pursue it wholeheartedly. The rewards are immeasurable, and the impact you will have on your student’s lives is truly profound. Embrace your calling and remember that you hold the power to inspire the next generation. Something that is desperately needed in today’s world, where online gaming often overshadows meaningful learning.

Let’s nurture a rich and authentic education that helps children experience the world in all its vibrant colours, rather than merely through the lens of a black mirror, the screens of their devices. Your journey as a teacher can be a beautiful catalyst for change, inspiring students to engage with their surroundings and discover their true potential. Together, we can foster curiosity, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for life beyond the screens, encouraging them to explore and embrace the wonders of the world around them.

My next journey for change involves joining a wonderful group of like-minded individuals who share the same passion for literacy and community engagement. Together, we’re excited to create a reading corner and lending library along the beautiful Kampot riverside. (KIRC) Every Saturday and Sunday from 3 PM until 5 PM, we’ll invite everyone to come and immerse themselves in the joy of reading. It’s an opportunity to inspire a love for books and foster a sense of community, making literature accessible to all. I can’t wait to see the smiles on people’s faces as they discover new stories and knowledge!
